The Oscar for Best Looking Hummus Goes to . . .

This Saturday, I stopped by Costco to pick up basic food supplies for this weekend. Although I wouldn't be watching the televised Oscar ceremony this Sunday, I would be helping to cook for church on Sunday evening, and I knew that that we had to spruce up the church meal to make it Oscar-caliber. Into my cart, I threw a few refrigerated logs of goat cheese, an aged wedge of parmesan cheese, and a plastic mesh bag filled with purple onion bulbs. Those ingredients would later come together as a "baked chevre and onion tart," with golden-brown puff pastry strips laid over the top as a lattice crust.

But imagine my pleasant surprise when I stopped by the refrigerated foods aisle and saw a gigantic tub of creamy hummus. This was no ordinary hummus. The presentation was outstanding. Underneath the transparent plastic lid, the exposed surface of the hummus was generously bespeckled with a burgundy-colored paprika and topped with a tight cluster of pine nuts, strategically placed in the center.

I don't need to open an envelope to discover that Costco has won the award for best presentation and costume design of commercially-made hummus.

  2. What a fantastic looking hummus! I'll be damned if it's called Kirkland Signature Hummus.

  3. It looks like Sabra. I love that brand of hummus, and I discovered recently that they sell large tubs at Costco. But, I always find that the extras they put on top (whether it be pine nuts or red pepper flakes and chilipaste) never seem to be enough for that large tub. They sell single packs too, at Harris Teeter. You can check it out online: http://www.sabra.com/index.html

  5. Hi Kathy, it is actually Meza Artisan Organic, but from Tran! it sounds like there may be some other brands at Costco, also worth checking out!

Haha, I completely agree! I don't think that the "Kirkland" house-brand would look anything close to that Christine D.!

That is so interesting Tran!, I have never seen that brand myself, but I am wondering . I haven't heard of Harris Teeter,

I wish I had a picture of the tart Pink Nest, but until then, I am going to direct everyone to your site!

  6. Oops, sorry about that unfinished post Tran!, I meant to say that I was wondering if Costcos in different regions have different products. Thanks for the suggestion of Sabra hummus! Also, I have never heard of Harris Teeter, but I think that it is a Virginia market! I wish we had some here in San Francisco.

  7. That looks great! I hope they have it at my local Costco. Sometimes, regional items never make it to other Costcos. Like in Hawaii, Costco always stocks dried squid snacks in 3 gallon sized containers...no so here!

  8. It's probably old news by now, but I love the new design of your site! As you can probably tell by my unwillingless to keep my phone with me (for fear of getting called back to work) this weekend, I've been too busy to peruse. Yes, I am ashamed to admit. Your photographs are more enticing each time I view them. Definitely put up a picture of last Sunday's meal if you get a chance. It was wonderful.

  9. I love how regional store locations sell different items Elmo Monster, especially those McDonald's that serve beer in Germany! We need to get those in the U.S.!

Thank you Jinerous, and I completely understand and know that you are overwhelmed right now. I've been checking up on your sites, and can tell you are busy. But even when there are no updates, I just read your old posts over and over again!

  12. Costco has just started carrying what I think is THE best hummus- Mediterranean Delights. It doesn't come with the toppings, but it is SO good. There's organic and all natural, it's kosher, and the most authentic that i've found! I looked into the brand and found out that they use fresh chickpeas (others use canned), and only sesame tahini (instead of all of the crappy oils), it's vegan, and gluten free. and once I found out that Pepsi now owns Sabra, there's no way I'm buying it.
so look for Mediterranean Delights next time-you'll love it!
